The minerals inside your water play a huge part in the flavors that you perceive from your coffee. If you want to adjust your coffees to lower bitterness, increase clarity, decrease acidity, or increase body, mineral water drops are one of the fastest and easiest ways to adjust your brew. These drops are single salt drops, so they will add a cation and an anion to each of your brews (each ion will do their own thing!)
We recommend adding these to coffees brewed with distilled water, although you can add them to any brew you make. For a 300mL cup, we recommend adding 3-5 drops (between 0.15mL-0.25mL) of mineral drops. Each mineral drop bottle is 59mL (2oz)
In general,
Chloride will increase body in your brew
Sulfate will increase clarity and acidity (if there are florals, florals will become more pronounced and heavy, increasing body perception)
Magnesium and calcium will affect the nature of the acidity and aromatics, making them more full bodied
Potassium will soften and sweeten the flavors in your brew
Sodium will reduce perceptions of bitterness, and adjust the acidity
Citrate will act as alkalinity agent, similar to bicarbonate but with a softer effect, allowing easier dialing in. Citrate will either not affect pH or increase pH (decreasing acidity), but may increase perceptions of acidity by removing compounds that get in the way of your tastebuds perceiving the acidity. If you are expecting high acidity from a coffee and not getting it, then try citrate or bicarbonate! It may just liven up immensely. In most scenarios, citrate and bicarbonate will reduce the perception of acidity.
